aconcagua 2010

Di has confirmed that she will be leading the Adventure Peaks Aconcagua Expedition in January 2010.

"Named Acconcahuac (the stone sentinel) by the Incas and rising to 6962m (22,840ft), Aconcagua is the highest peak in the southern and western hemispheres, and the world's highest summit outside Asia.

Climbers have long been attracted to Aconcagua because of its height.  The mountain is also unique because its 'normal route' of ascent involves no glaciation and practically no 'fall-offable' terrain."  Barry Blanchard,  World Mountaineering (Salkeld).

Situated in South America "the Andes is the longest mountain range in the world with over 7000 km of continuous waves of peaks, from the shores of the Caribbean in the north to Cape Horn in Chile in the south.  Technically, Aconcagua lies to the east of the main Andean chain, in the smaller Frontal Range, just inside Argentina's border with Chile." Seven Summits (Beazley).

Aconcagua is also the second highest of the Seven Summits and if the blonde pigtails manage to flap their way to the top, that will be Number 6 for Di.  Not that I'm counting.......
