The end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010 will always be remembered for providing some of the best ski touring that I can remember.

Over the past few days I haven't had to travel far from Grantown to ski hills that I would have thought never been possilbe.

Take yesterday for example.  The Hills of Cromdale form a distinct barrier between Strath Spey and Strath Avon.  From Sgor Gaoithe to Creag an Tarmachain the ridge undulates for some 14 km and provides some of the best views in the Stath.  Infact, to quote from the SMC The Cairngorms (Watson) "Below it [Sgor Gaoithe] there is a magnificent roadside viewpoint where the road to Nethy Bridge branches off, looking above the great peat bogs towards Dorback Burn and the pine carpet of Abernethy to the Cairngorms and Monadh Liath; indeed, it is one of the best views from any road in Scotland".

With a high point of 722m at Creagan a Chaise (not even a corbett!) these hills provide an excellent alternative when the higher hills are either storm bound or under the cloud.
