a ski traverse of the cairngorms
With an excellent weather forecast and exceptional ski touring conditions on the East Coast, Catrin and Di decided to attempt a traverse of the Cairngorms on ski's.
On Saturday morning after doing the car shuttle, we drove to Tomintoul and started the long skin up to Inchroy, some 11 km up the Glen. We managed to do this entirely on ski's with very little gravel hopping.
Once at Inchroy, we started the long climb up to the summit of Ben Avon before dropping down to the Sneck. Not a soul to be seen with the exception of the red deer in the valley floor, the grouse and the mountain hares.
We then continued up to the summit of Beinn A' Bhuid before dropping down to the Moine Bhealaidh where we shivered through the night.
Grateful for the sun in the morning, we then skinned up to Beinn a'Chaorainn before dropping down it's SW flank to the Hutchison Memorial Hut. This was uninterupted fresh powder providing us with possible one of the best descents that either of us has done in Scotland.
From the Hutchie hut, rejoining the hoards of tracks, we scooted up to Loch Etchachan before heading up to the summit of Ben MacDui and then the long descend back down to the Cas Car Park via the twin burns into Lochan.
I'll let the photo's speak for themselves.
